How Much Do AI Training Jobs Really Pay?
By AITasks.live editorial
Published Updated Sources reviewed
Short answer: There is no single AI training pay rate. Platforms publish different rates by field, location and project, and a high advertised ceiling is not average earnings. Compare the actual offer, pay unit, available hours and unpaid preparation time before deciding whether a role is worth your time.
The examples below were checked against original platform pages on 16 October 2026. They illustrate published terms, not a market-wide pay survey or a promise of work.
Published pay by platform
| Platform | Published example | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Mercor | $50–$180/hr on its management consulting page | A marketing range for a specialty, not an offer to every applicant |
| micro1 | Role-specific rates; see our reviewed micro1 listings | Confirm currency, hourly versus annual pay, country restrictions and the actual contract |
| Outlier | Full-stack engineering: up to $50/hr; Singapore law: up to $75/hr; ML/AI expertise: up to $150/hr | These are ceilings on separate pages, not typical earnings. The coding page lists Australia, Canada, UK and US; the law page specifies Singapore |
| DataAnnotation | Its FAQ pay section lists general work starting at $25–$50+/hr, multilingual at $20+, coding at $40–$150+, and STEM/professional work at $40–$125+ | Other answers on that FAQ quote different bands, including $25–$30+ general and $50–$100 coding. Confirm the task offer |
| Alignerr | We are holding the pay comparison for the backend example | Its header says $90–$120/hr while its US quick facts say $25–$100/hr. Neither is a verified offer for a reader |
| Handshake AI | Its Fellowship FAQ publishes $30–$125/hr based on education, expertise and project | Some projects use hourly pay, per-task pay, a combination or staged task payments |
These platforms are included for editorial comparison. The AITasks.live directory currently carries Mercor and micro1 opportunities only.
Why old job examples can mislead
A visible rate can outlast the project it described. These two Mercor pages show why availability matters:
- The Coding Expert page still displays $70–$80/hr, but says it is no longer accepting applications. This is a historical advertised rate.
- The Investment Banking Expert page is a standing talent network. It describes past rates of $100–$130/hr and explicitly says that joining is not applying to a specific project. A future project sets its own rate and hours.
Do not infer an active opening from a visible salary. Check application availability and whether the page is a project or a talent network. We keep standing networks separate from active task counts.

Advertised rates versus actual earnings
A useful offer gives more than a headline number. Check these five things:
- The pay unit. An hourly range, annual salary and amount per accepted task are different. Do not turn one into another without reliable hours and contract terms.
- The paid activities. Screening, interviews, onboarding, revisions and administrative time may have different rules. Ask which activities are billable.
- The available workload. Passing an assessment does not guarantee hours. micro1's FAQ explicitly says certification does not guarantee immediate project placement.
- Location and qualifications. A rate advertised for a licensed professional or one country is not automatically available to applicants elsewhere. Remote work does not mean worldwide eligibility.
- The final payment terms. Currency, accepted-task rules, fees and payment timing affect what you receive. Read the contract rather than relying on a review or an older advertisement.
Outlier's coding page says lower rates apply to non-core work, including initial onboarding or overtime phases. Its incentive figures describe past payments, not a guaranteed addition to your rate.
Estimate your effective hourly rate
Hypothetical example: suppose you spend two unpaid hours preparing and completing assessments, then work ten paid hours at $40/hr. That is $400 for twelve hours of your time: about $33/hr before taxes and fees.
Use your own paid and unpaid time. This calculation measures the return on the time you spend; it does not establish the legal pay classification of an activity.
How and when platforms say they pay
| Platform | What the checked original source says |
|---|---|
| Outlier | Its Outlier FAQ says weekly on Tuesdays, using PayPal, Airtm or ACH |
| Mercor | Its consulting page says weekly via Stripe or Wise; confirm your project contract |
| DataAnnotation | Its FAQ says PayPal, within a few days after a withdrawal request |
| Handshake AI | Its FAQ says Fellows are contracted and paid directly by Handshake and that pay models vary |
| micro1 and Alignerr | Check the actual offer and current official payment instructions. We have not established a universal schedule from the sources reviewed for this guide |
Handshake explicitly says accepted Fellows are paid for its general onboarding, including the quiz and practice task. This does not mean that every platform pays for initial screening.
Improve your chances of a suitable offer
- Use your strongest domain. Show credentials and concrete review, writing or technical experience. Start with our resume guide.
- Prepare before a limited attempt. Read the assessment guide and follow each platform's current rules.
- Compare the complete offer. A lower rate with clear paid activities can be more useful than a high ceiling with no available tasks.
- Keep a simple record. Track your actual paid hours, accepted tasks, unpaid preparation and receipts.
- Review empty queues realistically. See what to do when there are no tasks. Do not budget around unconfirmed work.
FAQ
How much do AI training jobs pay per hour?
It depends on the role and location. The checked examples above include $30–$125/hr in Handshake's program and higher ceilings for some specialist roles elsewhere. These examples are advertised terms, not a typical worker's earnings.
How much does Mercor pay?
Mercor sets terms by project. Its consulting page publishes $50–$180/hr, while its banking talent network describes past $100–$130/hr projects. Neither guarantees a new applicant that rate or any hours.
How much does micro1 pay?
Check the individual role and final offer. We do not use third-party medians as a substitute for an hourly rate, annual salary or project-specific terms.
Is DataAnnotation's advertised starting pay guaranteed?
Its FAQ publishes starting bands by track and contains differing figures in different answers. An advertised starting band is not proof of your acceptance, task availability or a particular offer.
Can AI training work be a full-time income?
A project may provide substantial work for a period, but acceptance and certification are not guarantees of a continuing workload. Budget around confirmed contracts and your actual experience, with room for gaps.
