Rejected or No Tasks on AI Training Platforms? What to Do Next

By AITasks.live editorial

Published Updated Sources reviewed

Short answer: A rejection or an empty task queue usually reflects how project-based this work is. It isn't a final judgment of your ability. Silence often means no project matches your profile right now. An explicit rejection usually means you didn't meet the bar for that specific role or assessment. Either way, the most useful steps are the same: check your account for anything you haven't finished, fix what you control (profile, track, setup), and apply to more than one platform. Don't make duplicate accounts or fake your location.

First: which situation are you in?

Silence after applying

Most platforms tell you directly that you might not hear back:

  • DataAnnotation: "If you haven't heard from us or received any assignments, it likely means your application is still under review or hasn't been accepted yet." It adds that it is "unable to provide direct responses for every applicant" (DataAnnotation FAQ).
  • Handshake AI: "Just because a candidate has not heard back does not mean they were not selected! When there's a project that matches their expertise, our team will reach out" (Handshake AI FAQ).
  • Alignerr: "We review candidates on a rolling basis and will contact you if your background matches an active project" (Alignerr listing).
  • Mercor: You're notified when your application moves on, "in the meantime, you're welcome to keep applying to other open roles" (Mercor).

What to do: Check spam and your dashboard. Make sure you actually finished every step: on Mercor, an application isn't sent until you click Submit, and an interview that was "too short" doesn't count (Mercor). Then keep applying elsewhere rather than waiting.

Explicit rejection or failed assessment

PlatformRetake / next step (per platform or as noted)
DataAnnotationStarter Assessment is one attempt: "There are no retakes or second chances" (source)
MercorAI interview: up to 3 retakes. Most other assessments: single submission. Support doesn't give scores or feedback; if feedback exists, it's linked in your submission email (source)
micro1You can request feedback if not certified (micro1 interview guide). It does not specify a universal retake limit; use the instructions in your account
OutlierNo public retake policy. For sign-up questions, use the contact details in your Outlier account (Outlier FAQ)
AlignerrThe cited role page does not specify retake rules; check your application instructions

Then fix the likely cause

  1. Wrong track or role. If you applied to a specialist role at the edge of your experience, aim for one where your evidence is strongest. On Mercor, many roles reuse the same assessments, so passing the right one can open several listings (Mercor).
  2. Thin rationales. Most tests reward specific, rubric-based explanations. See how to pass the assessments.
  3. Resume doesn't show the fit. Rewrite your headline and top bullets around your domain. See the resume guide.
  4. Technical problems. If audio, video or connection issues ruined an attempt, report it with screenshots. Mercor asks for these at support@mercor.com (Mercor).
  5. Eligibility. Location, language or work-authorization limits can rule you out regardless of skill. Some Mercor listings say they can't support H-1B or STEM OPT candidates (example).

Accepted, but no tasks

An empty queue is not enough to diagnose a problem with your score. micro1 says matching depends on project availability and requirements, and certification does not guarantee placement (micro1 FAQ).

Why queues go empty

  • The client project paused or finished. Work arrives in batches. Mercor says that during a pause "your weekly hour cap is set to 0 hours" and that there's "no set timeline" (Mercor support).
  • There's no demand for your skill right now. DataAnnotation says availability "depends on both the demand for your skills and your past performance" (DataAnnotation).
  • A qualification or onboarding step is still pending. Outlier has general onboarding, then project-specific qualification, before tasking (Outlier FAQ).
  • Quality. DataAnnotation says "subpar or problematic contributions may result in loss of access to future projects" (DataAnnotation).

What to do

  1. Look for unfinished steps: ID verification, tax forms, payment setup, training modules, project qualifications.
  2. Take more qualifications. DataAnnotation says that after passing you can take "additional specialist assessments to unlock higher-paying projects." Mercor's Assessments tab recommends assessments tied to active opportunities (Mercor).
  3. Keep your profile current: availability, time zone, languages, new skills.
  4. Raise quality on the tasks you do get. Read every guideline update, and take your time on tasks.
  5. Set a time limit. As an editorial planning suggestion, review your progress after a week and apply elsewhere if nothing has changed. This is not a platform deadline.

Project ended or offboarded

  • Normal endings: Mercor says contributors "are not automatically moved to a new project" and need to apply for new opportunities (Mercor support).
  • Offboarding decisions: Mercor says these are made by the project team and "are conclusive". Support can't overturn them, but you can ask your point of contact for context (Mercor support).
  • New offers: Treat a later project as a new decision. Check its rate, expected workload and payment terms instead of assuming your earlier contract carries over.

What not to do

  • Don't create a second account or use someone else's identity. Platforms verify ID (Outlier, Mercor and DataAnnotation all describe ID checks).
  • Don't use a VPN to appear eligible in another country. DataAnnotation's ID check flags VPNs (DataAnnotation).
  • Don't buy "assessment answers" or post questions online. Sharing is prohibited (Mercor).
  • Don't pay anyone to get you in. DataAnnotation: "We will never ask for money from you for anything." Treat any recruiter asking for fees as a red flag.

Build a pipeline, not a single bet

No single application is a reliable income plan. Keep a simple tracker: platform, role, date applied, assessment status, rate, eligibility, next step.

FAQ

Why am I not getting any tasks after being accepted?

Possible reasons include no active project matching your skills, location or qualifications right now, or a client project has paused. Check for unfinished onboarding or qualification steps, take any extra assessments offered, and apply to other platforms while you wait.

Does no response mean I was rejected?

Not necessarily. DataAnnotation says silence means your application is still under review or wasn't accepted. Handshake AI says not hearing back doesn't mean you weren't selected, and it reaches out when a project matches.

Can I reapply after failing an AI training assessment?

It depends. DataAnnotation's Starter Assessment can't be retaken. Mercor allows up to three AI-interview retakes, but most other assessments are one attempt. micro1 lets you request feedback and apply to other roles. Outlier and Alignerr don't publish retake rules.

Should I make a new account to start over?

No. Platforms verify identity, and duplicate accounts can cost you access entirely. Improve your profile and apply to different roles or platforms instead.

How long should I wait for tasks before moving on?

There's no official timeline. A practical approach: if nothing changes within about a week, update your profile and apply elsewhere, and keep your existing account in good standing.
