How to Pass the Outlier, micro1, Alignerr and Mercor Assessments
By AITasks.live editorial
Published Updated Sources reviewed
Short answer: Most AI training assessments test three things: whether you follow detailed instructions, whether your domain knowledge holds up, and whether you can explain your judgment clearly in your own words. Retakes are limited or not offered at all on most platforms, so treat your first attempt as the only one. Read every instruction, write specific rationales, and don't use AI tools unless the platform explicitly allows them. No method guarantees a pass.
How each platform screens applicants
| Platform | Main screening step | Retakes (per platform, unless noted) | AI tools during test |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mercor | AI video interview (~20 min) plus role assessments | Interview: up to 3 retakes, and hiring managers can see your count. Most other assessments: single submission (source, source) | Not allowed for writing answers, rating responses or evaluating code (source) |
| micro1 | Zara interview; technical roles can include coding and annotator roles a human data exercise (micro1 interview guide) | The guide does not specify retake limits. Feedback can be requested after unsuccessful certification | Follow the instructions for your interview; the public guide does not set out a detailed AI-tool policy |
| Alignerr | Screening and domain-specific Zara interviews in the backend role example (source) | No retake rules stated on that page | Check assessment instructions; permission to use outside help is not established by the listing |
| Outlier | Skill screenings within a 30–90 minute onboarding, then project-specific qualification (Outlier FAQ) | Not published | Not stated on the FAQ; assume no |
| DataAnnotation | Starter Assessment (~1 hour; specialized ones 1–2 hours) | None. "You can only take the Starter Assessment once" (source) | Not stated on the FAQ; assume no |
| Handshake AI | Application review, then ~2 hours of paid onboarding modules, a knowledge quiz and a practice task (source) | Not published | "Strictly prohibited" (source) |
Policies change. Check each platform's current instructions before you start.
Before any assessment: five things to do
- Pick the right role or track. Mercor's first tip is to "ensure the assessment is a good fit for your background" (Mercor). Choosing a hard specialist track you can't back up wastes a one-shot attempt.
- Set up your environment. Mercor recommends a quiet room, a tested camera and mic, headphones, and Chrome. Firefox and mobile browsers aren't supported (Mercor). Have pen and paper, and a calculator if relevant.
- Practice where the platform lets you. Mercor's Practice Interview is free, unlimited and "does not affect future opportunities." micro1 offers an Interview Prep tool that simulates the real interview (micro1 interview guide).
- Block uninterrupted time. Mercor notes that timed assessments "cannot be paused" and that reloading can lose answers. If the assessment rules permit it, keep a backup of your own long written responses (Mercor).
- Read the guidelines twice. Instruction-following is usually what's being tested. A correct answer in the wrong format can still fail.
AI interviews (Mercor, micro1, Alignerr)
AI interviewers ask role-specific questions and follow up on your answers. micro1 describes "open-ended technical questions," "scenario-based questions" and, for technical roles, a coding challenge (micro1 interview guide). Mercor says some interviews "require deep discussion of prior experience" while others test language or reasoning (Mercor).
How to answer well
- Be specific. Name the system, the case type, the dataset, the trade-off. "I reduced p95 latency by adding a read-replica and caching hot keys" says more than "I improved performance."
- Use a simple structure. Situation, what you did, why, and the result. Then stop.
- Talk through your reasoning. These platforms are hiring people to explain judgments, so show how you think, not only the conclusion.
- Don't go quiet for long. Mercor warns that extended silences may make the AI interject. If it cuts in, you can tell it you weren't finished (Mercor).
- Stay within your real experience. Follow-up questions tend to expose overclaiming.
- Don't end early. Mercor counts an interview that is much shorter than planned as "too short," and you have to retake it (Mercor).
Save retakes for real problems
Mercor allows up to three interview retakes, but its waiting room asks you to keep them for technical issues, and hiring managers can see your retake count. A retake also resets your application progress (Mercor). Use the practice interview for rehearsal.
Written and task-based assessments (Outlier, DataAnnotation, Alignerr, Mercor)
These usually look like the real work: compare two model responses, rate them against a rubric, write a better response, find the bug, or fact-check a claim.
What strong answers have in common
- They follow the rubric exactly. If the guidelines define "helpfulness" or "honesty" a certain way, use that definition, not your own.
- They give specific rationales. "Response B is better" is weak. "Response B is better because A states the 2019 guideline as current, which is outdated, and A ignores the user's request for a table" is strong.
- They fact-check. Models make confident-sounding errors. Verify claims instead of trusting fluent text.
- They're thorough, not rushed. DataAnnotation says it reviews "for thoroughness and accuracy rather than speed," and that successful applicants "spend more time crafting thorough answers" (DataAnnotation).
- They're proofread. Typos and sloppy formatting look like poor attention to detail, which is what's being measured.
For coding assessments
- Read the problem statement for edge cases and ambiguities. Alignerr's backend listing asks experts to "identify and flag edge cases or ambiguities" (Alignerr).
- DataAnnotation says coding applicants need the "ability to solve LeetCode-style problems" (DataAnnotation).
- Explain why code is correct or incorrect, not only whether. Mercor bans using LLMs to predict "code behavior or runtime results" (Mercor LLM policy).
The AI-tool rule: don't
The policies are explicit. Mercor prohibits using LLMs to evaluate model responses, write justifications or predict code behavior, and says AI-produced submissions "will be identified and flagged" (Mercor). Some Mercor assessments disable copy-paste for that reason (Mercor). Handshake AI says external AI tools are "strictly prohibited" (Handshake). Beyond the rules, the whole job is human judgment that models can't yet supply. If you hand that judgment to a model, you're failing the actual test.
Also don't share or look for leaked questions. Mercor prohibits sharing specific questions or screenshots (Mercor).
After the assessment
- Waiting is normal. DataAnnotation says to expect an email "within a few days." micro1 gives a "real-time result" on certification. Mercor notifies you when your application moves on.
- Passing is not a job offer. micro1 says certification makes you eligible for matching, without guaranteeing immediate placement (micro1 FAQ). Mercor can reuse assessments across listings (Mercor).
- If you didn't pass, see Rejected or no tasks? What to do next.
FAQ
Are AI training assessments paid?
Do not assume screening time is paid unless the offer says so. Handshake explicitly compensates accepted Fellows for general onboarding, including its quiz and practice task (Handshake FAQ). That does not establish the payment rules for other platforms or pre-selection assessments.
Can I retake a failed AI training assessment?
Often not. DataAnnotation's Starter Assessment is one attempt only. Mercor allows up to three AI-interview retakes, but most of its other assessments are single submission. The micro1 interview guide and Outlier FAQ we reviewed do not specify retake limits; check your dashboard and the rules for your assessment.
How long is the Mercor AI interview?
Mercor says most take about 20 minutes, though some are shorter or longer. A completed interview result is reused for other applications that need the same interview.
Can I use ChatGPT during an AI training assessment?
No, unless the platform explicitly says you can. Mercor allows grammar checks only. Handshake AI prohibits external AI tools entirely. Submissions that look AI-generated can be flagged.
What's the best way to prepare for the micro1 Zara interview?
micro1 recommends choosing one core skill to be evaluated on and using its Interview Prep tool to simulate the interview first. Set up a quiet room with a working camera and mic, and give specific, concrete examples from your own experience.
