Short answer: Mercor is a real company offering AI training and evaluation contracts, with a documented payout process through Stripe or Wise. Whether it suits you depends on your field, your need for steady hours and your comfort with time tracking. This review checks Mercor's published process; it is not a report of our own contracting experience or an independent audit of worker payments.
Last checked: 16 October 2026.
What is Mercor?
Mercor connects professionals with projects that train and evaluate AI models. Its Experts page describes work such as reviewing model outputs, creating examples and judging quality in your field. Medicine, law, engineering and consulting are among the domains it covers.
How applying to Mercor works
According to Mercor's application guide:
- Find a role that matches your background and upload your resume.
- Complete its checklist, which may include an AI interview, other assessments and work-authorization checks.
- Click Submit once all required steps are complete.
Mercor says prior AI experience is not required. Its interview adapts to your field, and it says interview responses are neither sold nor used to train customer AI models (Experts FAQ). Some roles add paid work trials; Mercor's Project & Onboarding FAQ gives a review and payment window of one to two weeks after submission. Check the specific trial's terms before starting.
For preparation, see How to pass AI training assessments.
How Mercor pays
Mercor's Payments guide says:
- Hourly payouts are released weekly on Wednesdays, around noon PST as stated in its documentation, for the previous work week. Release is different from arrival in your bank.
- Stripe Connect is the main provider; Wise serves regions Stripe does not support. Mercor assigns the provider by region.
- With Wise, you must accept the transfer email for each payout.
- The first Stripe payout has a seven-day hold. Bank processing can add time.
Use the same legal name on your offer, payout account and bank account (Project Onboarding).
How much does Mercor pay? Mercor says rates depend on expertise, project complexity and demand, with terms set upfront (Experts FAQ). Check each offer's rate, pay unit and hour cap. An hourly range and a per-task fee are different offers; neither establishes guaranteed weekly earnings. Browse Mercor listings on AITasks.live and our AI training pay guide.
Time tracking and hours review
Mercor's onboarding guide requires the Insightful desktop app for tracked work. It supports Windows 10+ and macOS 11+; Linux is limited to Insightful's beta. Chromebooks, iPads and phones are unsupported.
Insightful records time and periodic screenshots while the timer runs. Mercor's Account Security and Conduct policy says non-working time, unauthorized assistance or misuse of tools can lead to payment reductions or reversals. Read the contract and project rules, and keep personal activity outside tracked sessions.
Mercor complaints: practical risks to check
Before relying on an anecdote about Mercor, compare it with the terms of your own offer. Mercor's own Project & Onboarding FAQ establishes these limitations:
- Projects can pause, with no tasks and a zero-hour weekly cap.
- Pauses have no fixed end date.
- A completed project does not automatically lead to another assignment; matching depends on demand and eligibility.
Before investing time in screening, ask which steps are paid and how long they should take. If you've been accepted but aren't getting work, see Rejected or no tasks? Do this.
Is Mercor a scam? How to stay safe
Mercor is a real platform. That does not authenticate every message using its name. Basic checks:
- Use Mercor's official website and check that application links resolve to work.mercor.com. Look for the offer inside your own account. Mercor's work-trial FAQ says valid trials appear in the Offers tab and arrive with a Mercor email.
- The steps in Mercor's application guide do not include an application fee. Never send money to a supposed recruiter or buy equipment from an unsolicited contact. Verify unexpected requests independently through Mercor support.
- Mercor documents Stripe and Wise payouts to your own bank account (Payments). Treat requests to route payments through someone else's account as a warning sign.
For questions, use the contact details on Mercor's Experts page or your account's support channel.
Who Mercor is a good fit for
- Likely good fit: people with relevant domain expertise who want project-based work and accept monitored time tracking.
- Less suited: people who need guaranteed weekly hours or only have a Chromebook, iPad or phone.
Remote does not mean worldwide eligibility. Check the role's location and work-authorization requirements and Mercor's supported countries.
Mercor pros and cons
| Pros (per Mercor's documentation) | Cons / risks |
|---|---|

| Prior AI experience is not required | Domain expertise and role-specific screening still matter |
| Payment terms are stated upfront | Tracked hours can be reviewed and payments adjusted |
| Project-based opportunities | Pauses and gaps between assignments; no guaranteed weekly income |
